According to this morning's Coventry Telegraph, Coventry City supporter Joe Elliott will not be standing for the election for Mayor in Coventry and has joined those supporting the 'No' campaign for an elected mayor.

There is a referendum on May 3rd when the citizens of Coventry can say if they want the City to have an elected mayor or to continue with the system of Coventry City Council's leader and cabinet.

The 'No' campaign is being launched next Wednesday at the Council House and speaking about this to the CT's Les Reid, Mr Elliott who has the nickname of "Mr Coventry" said:"An elected mayor is not a good idea. It would put too much power into one person's hands. I see no evidence that elected mayors have worked so far in generating economic growth. You only have to look at places like Hartlepool, Doncaster and Stoke which have scrapped it's mayor system.

"I detect no great public interest in Coventry and I am happy to support John Mutton, other councillors and officers who are doing an excellent job i trying to bring the City of Coventry up to where it should be.

"If you criticise the current system and go against it, you've got to provide good reasons why another way is better. I've heard nothing that makes me thik that having an elected mayor is a better system."
