Coventry City goalkeeper Keiren Westwood has admitted that he put in a good word for Michael Quirke to help the youngster get a call up for the Republic Of Ireland's U21 side.

Speaking to the CT, Westwood said: "I had a phone call about him and I obviously put a good word in for him.

"I got a text first and then the Irish coach spoke to me about him and I told them he is 19 and wants to play and is a decent keeper."

As for his outstanding full debut and resulting attention, he said: "I'm delighted for him because he is a good kid and works his knackers off to be fair to him.

He's learning all the time and as long as he keeps listening to me and not being cheeky, because he is another cheeky chappie.

"I have seen his save. In fact he came to me and said, 'Westy, Westy, come and see my save,' and it was a good one and I am glad he made it.

"I was talking to him before the game and, as he is a young kid, I feel I have a duty to look after him and help make him better. And if I can help in any way then I will be happy.

"He's not the only one. I give my gloves out to the other kids and they obviously enjoy it because you see some of the kids with gloves that are all ripped and they cost money, and when you give them even an old pair they are buzzing.

"But I gave Quirkey a decent pair on Tuesday and I am sure he was made up.

"He did his family proud which is what I told him to do. He didn't let himself or the team down and did really well.

"He's been doing all the press and his name is down for stuff so the lads have been hammering him, but that's what happens when you are a young kid and I am sure that helps make sure he doesn't step out of line."
