Gillingham went a point ahead of Coventry City in the League One table with a 1-1 draw at Walsall.
In a game at the Banks's Stadium which did not kick off until 6pm on a Sunday evening, Gillingham took the lead in the 69th minute when Bradley Dack netted.
But five minutes later, the Saddlers were level through an Ashley Grimes goal from close range.
Former Coventry City forward Cody McDonald played for 89 minutes and was cautioned.
