Former Coventry City player Lee Fowler, now at Forest Green Rovers, has admitted he had an alcohol problem and spent a month in the Tony Adams Sporting Chance Clinic in Surrey in an attempt to kick his habit.

Fowler played for Coventry City from 1999 until 2003 and joined the club under Gordon Strachan, but did not play for the club until Roland Nilsson gave him his debut as substitute against Burnley in 2001.

The Welsh born player represented his country at under 21 level 12 times, but now admits that the booze blighted his career and has vowed never to drink again.

After he left Coventry City he went on to play at nine different clubs and he now acknowledges that he was to blame.

"Drink would have led to me being mentally ill and ultimately it would have cost me my life," he reflected.

"Ability wise I know I could have played regularly in the top flight, but I've gone from club to club and they've all been right to get rid of me. I would blame other people, but I know it was all my fault."
