Coventry need to improve or they will struggle

Coventry City defender Richard Wood has said that his side have struggled to get going in their first few games of the season. The Sky Blues have had periods of form where they have dominated parts of the game, like the fist half against Bury, but then let them back into the game and struggled to snatch a draw from the jaws of victory.

All too often there has been a lack of passion displayed as well and only in the Capital One Cup game at home to Birmingham City did they show what they are capable of if they lived up to there potential.

If Coventry City could achieve 90 minutes each game with the form they showed in the first half against Bury and with a bit of the passion shown against Birmingham, they would be serious contenders for at least a top six finish to the season, but at the moment, they are stuck in what Richard Wood described as first gear.

Speaking to the CT's Andy Turner: Richard Wood admitted: “Looking at it overall the last two games haven’t been good games for us. We were miles off the performance we were trying to achieve.

"We know there has to be a lot of improvement and we need to go up a few gears as well because it’s not good enough to play as well as we did against Blues and then drop so low against Crewe.

“It’s hard to put our finger on it. It’s just disappointing. We know it’s not good enough and that we need to improve quickly because we need that first win of the season in the league and we need to get it quick.

“That 45 minutes in the first half against Bury is how we should be playing in this league. We know we can do it but we have just got to iron a few things out and make sure the tempo is right.

“I think that’s the key word, tempo, because we started off slowly against Burton and if we can pick that up and really go at teams and push them, I know we’ve got the quality to hurt teams. We see it in training every day and we have just got to apply that on a match day.”

For far too long Coventry City have been constantly inconstant, not just this season but for decades, but if only they could achieve some modicum of consistency and concentrate for the whole game instead the fans could have something to shout about for a change.
