The highly experienced Republic Of Ireland international had been signed by then City boss Andy Thorn to boost his squad during the summer and he started the season in the first team.

However, when Mark Robins replaced Thorn in the Coventry City hotseat, the defender was not in the plans of the man and was dropped to the U21 side for whom he made three appearances including an excellent outing at Leicester City in a 3-2 win.

Kilbane took some time off to weigh up his options and announced on Friday that he has retired from playing and would concentrate on other projects including media work with one job yesterday seeing him summarising on the Everton versus Tottenham game.

Speaking to BBC Coventry & Warwickshire, Mark Robins said of Kilbane: "He's been a great professional throughout his career. "It happens to everybody. He's decided to close this chapter in his football career and his life and move on to pursue other avenues. I wish him all the best."
