Cov Kid Greg Abbott Could Do A Job - Sillett

Former Coventry City player and manager John Sillett has said that former Sky Blue Greg Abbott could be a potential new manager for Coventry City.

In an interview with Talk Sport, Sillett said: “It’s a bad slide that the club are on at the moment and the amazing thing for me is that at the end of the year if they were going to sack Andy Thorn after relegation it was the time to do it.

“But to let a man bring in nine players and then sack him after four games, I really don’t understand it.”

“We were in the third division when I first joined Coventry City when Jimmy Hill had just taken over, and we need another Jimmy if we can find one out there.

“It’s all right the public saying they want Harry Redknapp and what have you but we haven’t got the money to pay Harry Redknapp.

"So we have got to be looking for new talent who has worked in the lower leagues and a perfect example – and I shouldn’t say this – but Carlisle have got a young Coventry kid in Greg Abbott who has done a great job up there on a shoestring.

“They have really got to get down to it now and let someone come in who has got to be experienced and, for me, got to have worked close in that league and he’s going to have one hell of a budget because I wouldn’t have thought there is anything left in the kitty.

“But to think we have gone down a league and brought nine players in and then the manager has gone after four matches, we’ve done something wrong somewhere along the line.

“The problem is the rent at the Ricoh is £1.3million a year. After being demoted to NPower League One you have got to look at that and say you are not going to get the same gates we had so we have got to somehow get a deal to get the rent down.

“We don’t own a seat at the stadium. Highfield Road was sold for £10million – something like that – and not a seat is owned by the football club now. Where has it all gone wrong?

“In my days the plans were going through and we thought we were going to get a stadium out of this world and a stadium that we owned, which is the crux of the matter.

“And now when you see they get no rent from the Casino, no rent from the hotel and nothing from the catering. It’s a disaster!”

“It’s a great club with great support and they deserve better than they are getting. It’s a great ground with a great atmosphere and there’s got to be a little help from somewhere.

"Either the council have got to give a bit or the Higgs Trust have got to give a little bit because not to have a team in Coventry would be a disaster.
