Former Coventry City youngster Greg Abbot has signed a contract extension to continue to manage Carlisle United.

The former defender from Wyken has signed a new deal which will keep him at Brunton Park until 2013. He was appointed as manager of the Cumbrians in November 2008.

Abbot has taken his team to Wembley for a JP Trophy Final and saved them from relegation but has hopes of taking them into the Premier League.

Speaking to the Carlisle News & Star, Abbot said: "You have to have a dream and an ambition - look at what Blackpool and Wigan achieved in getting into the Premier League and Scunthorpe getting into the Championship.

"You have to set your goals as high as possible. I think it is realistic to try to get into the Championship this season or next season and then consolidate and try to move on again. The dream is the Premier League. There will be blips along the way but we have still got to try to get to where we want to be.

"If you told Blackpool or Wigan they would play in the Premier League, they would have laughed.

"The foundations are right here as we have a good young squad, training facilities and the club is on an even keel financially so the infrastructure is in place."
