Coventry City have launched an investigation following a comment made by one of their players Gary Deegan on Twitter.

Dublin born Deegan, who was on holiday in Dubai, was having a conversation on Twitter with James McPake on Saturday evening about how proud he was to be Irish.

Then Deegan, tweeted “Up The RA” which was taken to mean the Irish Republican Army, a former terrorist organisation, which twice bombed the city of Coventry.

After sparking fury amongst some City supporters who saw the tweet with some complaining to both the club and the Football League, it is understood, Deegan tried to make amends by tweeting: “Everybody calm down. I apologise if I offended anybody. Was just taking the piss.” before closing down his account.

Coventry City CEO Tim Fisher said that the club were investigating the matter and said to the CT's Tina Junday; "We have received reports regarding a first team player and his use of Twitter and we investigating the matter.

"We do take all matters of this nature very seriously.

"It underlines that footballers like anybody else in the public eye, have to be extremely careful what they say on social networks, because their words are open for all to see and open to scrutiny."
