Former Sky Blue Jimmy Holmes was formally commended for disarming a man of a firearm in an incident in Coventry last year. The 53 year old who joined the police after giving up football was called to an report of a shooting in July 2006 in Keresley. Holmes and WPC Holly Smith both managed to get a gun off a 25 year old man.

The pair received their awards in Birmingham last week with Chief Superintendent Jon Hesketh, of Stoney Stanton Road police station, commenting : "The award to PCs Holly Smith and James Holmes are particularly deserving. They faced a man who told them he had a loaded firearm available to fire at any minute, yet they talked to him and, as unarmed officers, they secured his co-operation and subsequent arrest.

"This represents the day-to-day challenges police officers face and their actions show the quality of the people who serve our communities. We should all be rightly proud of them."

Doncaster Rovers have signed Matthew Mills on a six month contract. The centre half has struggled to get into the Manchester City side.
