Coventry City Ladies overcame a resolute Morecambe side in a Third Round Womens FA Cup fixture this afternoon.

A morning pitch inspection gave permission for the game to go ahead and on a cold afternoon at Bedworth United's Oval Ground.

Scott Riddell deputising for the indisposed Chris Holloway fielded a strong side and they were almost ahead after 48 second when a Morecambe defender sliced a Dale cross over her own bar.

Seven minutes later, City's goal machine Courtney Sweetman-Kirk headed into the side netting from a Formaston cross from the right.

Welsh international Hayley Ladd tried her luck from twenty yards before Nicole Dale again showed a clean pair of heels to set up another move.

Sweetman-Kirk broke from an 11th minute Morecambe corner before City were awarded a sixteenth minute free kick on the edge of the area for handball.

Helen Dermody took the kick and hit the bar and as the ball dropped earthwards, captain Natasha Lynch was on hand to tap in.

In the 19th minute, City doubled their lead with a stunning volley from the edge of the area from Helen Dermody.

City were camped in the Shrimpers half. Jade Formaston rattled the bar with a long ranger and Sweetman-Kirk had a shot caught by Clough before the Sky Blues won two corners on the half hour mark.

The chances for City continued. Three minutes later and Clough parried away a Formaston shot on the turn and dealt with a Dermody cross.

Out of nothing, Morecambe pulled a goal back in the 37th minute when Sue Wood came out of her goal and Megan Doherty slipped the ball past her into the empty net.

With five minutes of the half remaining, Clough dived to push round her post after a Sweetman-Kirk cross was cut back.

Formaston fired over before the half ended.

City were patient in their build up in the early stages of the second half and it was Doherty who had the first when she fired wide in the 52nd minute.

Nicole Dale missed an absolute sitter when clean through a minute later.

City won two corners and had a goal ruled out for offside before Formaston curled a 57th minute free kick wide.

Natalie Reay came on to try and add some more firepower to the Sky Blue attack which had useful outlets in Nicky Miles and Sweetman-Kirk.

A 70th minute injury to Laura Ivinson saw her hobble off after four minutes of treatment and the game was further delayed when Emma Hollingsworth being accidently headbutted by Doherty and poleaxed by a Morecambe forward when she returned to the action.

There were no real chances and City will take their place in Monday's draw.
