Coventry City Ladies closed in on the WPL Southern Division League leaders with a 1-0 home victory over Tottenham Ladies.

A blustery afternoon at Sphinx Drive meant that playing attractive, flowing football was near on impossible but it was the Sky Blues who had the better of the chances in the first half.

In the 50th minute, Ashley Neville played a great ball to Helen Dermody who flicked over for Maz Gauntlett to power a low shot from outside the area low into the net.

Hayley Ladd, along side Dermody was another having a good game and she helped Dermody have a shot palmed away by the Spurs keeper diving to her right in the 57th minute and two minutes after Spurs had an effort deflected for a corner.

Gauntlett fired over before Kim Maggs came on for her home debut and assisted the Sky Blues who had Kim Walton and Natasha Lynch strong at the back, stopping the threat of Wendy Martin who was instrumental in the visitors winning four corners in quick succession in the 73rd minute.

Tottenham applied the pressure late on but Coventry, who face Sporting Club Albion in a Birmingham County FA Womens Cup Semi-Final on Wednesday night, werre able to take the win.

City: Wood, Johnson, Miles, Barber, Lynch, Walton, Neville (Dale 61), Ladd, Gauntlett (Anderson 79), Dermody, Brace (Maggs 69).
