Coventry City boss Aidy Boothroyd is full of praise for Martin Cranie.

Speaking to the Sunday Mercury, Boothroyd said about Cranie: “I think Martin has done exceptionally well in midfield and has probably been one of our better players over the last period,” said the Coventry boss who revealed that he rates him that highly that he will endeavour to find a place for him in his side even when all his key players are back from injury.

“What he has done has been one of the bright spots of the last ten weeks. He has played at centre-back where he did exceptionally well and calmed everyone down.

“He’s played in the centre of midfield and he’s just a Rolls-Royce really because he can play anywhere and when everyone is back fit, he is the sort of player that, providing he stays fit and on top of his game and does everything he is supposed to do within training, he will – without a shadow of a doubt – be one of the first names on the team sheet. He’s the ultimate utensil. He’s a spoon who can do anything and that’s an enormous talent who always seems to have more within him.

“But he is one of those players who seems to slow time down and calm everyone else down around him, and you need people like that, particularly when it’s all fraught. You need people who can put their foot on the ball and settle down and keep it for us.”

He added: “It was only last year that he was in the Under-21s so he has got an awful lot more to give, and providing he can maintain his professionalism, which I am sure he will, then he will go on to big things with us.”
