Former Coventry City striker John Aloisi sent Australia to the World Cup Finals in Germany next year. The Aussies were leading the second leg against Uruguay 1-0 thanks to a close range 32nd minute goal from Bresciano and battled to send the game into penalties.

Up stepped Aloisi for the decisive penalty and the City striker who was highly popular during his time at Highfield Road duly scored to spark wild scenes in Sydney's Telstra Stadium.

Last night saw City's on loan keeper Marton Fulop play for Hungary U21's in their European U21 Championship play-off game away to Italy. Hungary were beaten 1-0 in Fermo by a 48th minute Pazzini goal after the sides had drawn 1-1 in the first leg in Budapest.

England U21 are also out losing 2-1 to France in the second leg.

Coventry kid James Quinn played for Northern Ireland in their 1-1 friendly draw with Portugal in Belfast.

Locally, Coventry Sphinx won 2-0 at Bridgnorth Town and Massey Ferguson beat Pershore Town 4-0 in league games.

In the Birmingham Midweek Floodlit Challenge Cup, Coventry Copsewood's home game with Cadbury Athletic was abandoned after twelve minutes due to an injury. Atherstone needed extra time to win at Smethwick Rangers.
