All Ain't Quiet On New Year's Day

Birmingham City are still comfortable at the top of the Championship table despite losing 1-0 at Ipswich. The second and third place teams Preston and Derby played each other with Billy Davies leaving his former club with a 2-1 win.

Elsewhere John Hartson scored for West Brom in a 3-1 defeat at Southend and there were wins for Palace,QPR,Hull,Wolves and Sunderland who won 2-0 at Leicester. The games at Luton and Plymouth were draw with Burnley's game postponed.

Coventry City's FA Cup opponents Bristol City drew 1-1 at Leyton Orient and are unbeaten in thirteen matches.

Locally, Nuneaton Borough lost the local derby when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Hinckley United.

Rugby Town who are 14th in the Southern League Premier Division table lost 2-1 at Kings Lynn whilst Bedworth United were beaten in a Midland Division fixture 5-2 at Bromsgrove Rovers.

A bitterly cold afternoon saw Alvechurch arrive as the latest team to try and stop Leamington's charge for the Midland Alliance title. A fter a forgettable first half in which the wind played it's part, the game burst into life with three goals in eight minutes. Ben Mackey opened the scoring on 50 mins, Keith Rostill equalised for the church five minutes later. Jamie Towers cored the winning goal in the 58th minute.

Leamington are now 19 pts clear at the top in the chasing pack are Stratford who drew 1-1 at Boldmere St Michaels and Atherstone who drew 2-2 at Cradley Town. Elsewhere,Racing Club Warwick lost at Studley.
