All About Fitness - Pressley

Coventry City manager Steven Pressley feels that fitness is playing a major part in the ability of the City players to stage comebacks and win matches.

It has been clear for the last few months that fitness coach Pete Tierney has got the players fitter than in previous seasons and this is ensuring that the City players have the strength to carry onto the final whistle and get results.

Teams are now aware of how we try to play and they are working exceptionally hard to nullify that,” Pressley told the Coventry Telegraph's Alan Poole.

“With all the effort they’re having to put in they’re finding that they tire in the second half – the game becomes more stretched and that allows us to play the way we want to.

“Barnsley really pressurised us in the first half but they had to play high-intensity football to stop us and I think that took its toll.

“Sometimes when a game isn’t going your way you can be too quick to make a change but I believe that if we are patient and persistent we will take control.

“That’s what’s happened in our last few games; it’s taken time for us to impose our philosophy on the game but when it’s come it’s made all the difference.

“You need to be fit to pull that off but all the hard work we put in during pre-season and the training we do every day is paying off and our fitness coach Pete Tierney deserves great credit for that.”
