Warwickshire Cricket League Results

The Warwickshire third XI and single team league premier division has Small Heath and Attleborough leading the way, Attleborough second with a game in hand 17 points adrift as the league enters the second half of the season lost their top spot as this was their bye week. Small Heath taking advantage in defending 154 to beat Highway 3rds in a close contest. The rest of the 3rd XI leagues see Spartan with 8 wins from 10 pushing towards the premier division from the East, beating Warwick 3rds on the day and maintain their lead over Rugby 3rds. This is a repeat of the battle for the title for the 2nd division from last year which went to the final day and Rugby with a game in hand are by no means out of the running this year. The west see Old #Edwardians relegated in 2012 bouncing back with a small lead over Entaco, all teams here have played 8 matches in the first 9 weeks and Entaco lost their lead of the division as this week was their bye whilst Old Eds claimed all 24 points. This is a close division and any of the top 5 could easily put a run together and win it. In the East 2nd Division rebranded M&B now the Birmingham Avengers are 10 points ahead of Marston Green but their 2 matches in hand and 6 wins from 7 places them well ahead of the rest who may in reality already be playing for second, whilst in 2 West a new club Shenley Fields leads everyone after the top two clashed this week. Shenleys field was decisive with captain Jamie Simpsons 5 for 8 blast reducing Bournville to 87 for 7 chasing 247 to win. This was not quite enough to win the match but the winning draw widened the gap between the clubs to 31 points and evn though Bourneville have a match in hand, at the halfway point, advantage Shenley

In division 4 top club Dunlop saw Faisal Riaz pick up 9 for 12 in 10 overs, Harjinder Singh taking the other wicket in a Walmley innings which included 6 ducks, Jules Phillips 21 being the only person in double figures, needless to say they won, handsomely against Walmley 4ths, as they had previously made 282 for 6 declared in 45 overs. Raiz definitely a contender for man of the day picked up 57 of these opening the innings and then Khalid Butt and Sohail at 5 and 6 made63 and 109 not out respectively in fast time. A mixture or experience and youth for Walmley saw Duncan Waught with 2 for 21 and Jordan Hoffman with a creditable 3 for 58 and getting the wicket of Khalid Butt. Oakfiled failed to win at Five Ways and lost 14 points on the day to their rivals. But remain second

The Premier division of the WCL see Sutton Coldfileld march on 6 wins from 10and only 1 loss, 184 points and 27 ahead of Rugby CC. Rugby are the rising stars of the WCL having been promoted last year and only a few years ago being in division 2. This week at Fillongley , Matt Ewer removed the top 3 in his opening spell the home side reeling at 45 for 4. A patient partnership of 48 from Danial Smith and Kyle Taylor steadied the ship but when they departed Ewer returned to mop up the tail, Fillongley 130 all out , Ewer 5 for 33. This posed not problem for Rugby to chase, and after an early wicket, Charles Robards 58 and Owen Edwards 64 Not Out got Rugby home inside 23 overs, Edwards scoring at better than a run a ball his 64 needing just 49 balls with 2 sixes and 10 fours. Sutton Coldfield for once did not win despite 239 for 5 against Kenilworth, Mark Guest 72 and James Hunt 38 not out. Kenilworth hung on 9 down with Dan Childs pick of the bowling 5 for 24 and Chris Prophet leading the rear guard with 38 in 89 balls and Michael Watts batting 9 holding out for 39 balls for his 33 not out.
