Warwickshire Cricket League Results

Last updated : 21 August 2011 By Graham Seal

It hardly seems like last week that the WCL 2011 got underway but we are now reaching the climax especially in the lower divisions which complete in 2 weeks time.

Today it is congratualtions to Five Ways Old Eds in Division 4 firsts, 55
points ahead of the pack at the start of play for the second week running they went down this week at Oakfield gaining 7 points. Five Ways batting first looked to be ahead most of the afternoon, with opener Zafron Ahmed making 101 and Jon Basset 55 not out in a total of 243 for 4 off 40 overs.

All was still going well as David Jones opening the bowling out 4 of the top 5 back in the pavilion, Then in came Carel Brand (101) and Oliver Vaughan (44 not out) to lead a fight back which had Oakfield getting home with 2 wickets and 3 balls to spare. After that Five Ways must have thought they would have to wait at least one more week, but that was not the case. Collycroft loss an equally close one against improving Hunningham whose recent form might just save them from relegation. Hunningham a mere 137 all out at Heckley Fields which is often a high scoring ground had Iqbal 5 for 31 and Bird 4 For 17 to thank for an unlikely victory by 6 runs. So despite a loss Five Ways are champions and in the closest of divisions the next 5 clubs still have a 14 point spread 2nd to 6th.

Many of the other promotion and relegation matters are wide open and none was more so than in Division 3 at the start of play as 2ndd met 3rd. Here a 24 point win for Hampton and Solihull gave them the added bonus of going to the top of a close table. Wishaw only 8 points adrift in 3rd at the start of the day were easily dispatch for 115 after Hampton has scored 195 all out.

The leaders at the beginning of the day Knowle and Dorridge also won but it was only a 20 pointer hence second and first swapped places. With 2 games to go the win by Hampton this week may well prove decisive in determining the top two.

In division 5 Aston CC are 1 point away from being champions with an
emphatic win over Stockingford, Stockingford 117 all out in 31 overs and Aston 118 for 2 in only 19 overs with B Nijib 65 not out. Wilnecote also winners at home to Leamington Khalsa today are 48 points adrift but mathematically could still win the division but Walmley 3rds and Thimblemill are still well in contention for the 2nd promotion spot. Bedworth 3rd seem to have divison 6 tied up needing only 3 points from 2 matches to edge out close neighbours Nuneaton 3rds

Looking at a moment at second elevens, division 3 see Bournville a win away with Hunningham most likely to be second, division 4 seconds is a similar affair with RMCC 20 points ahead of Leamigton Khalsa, whilst Aston who have already topped the 300 point barrier want to make it a double celebration and have both sides winning their divisions. Division 6 seconds is the closest race of these 2nd XI divisions with Star Alvis and Peugeot separated by 2 points. Here on the day the top two met at Peugeot and in a close battle Peugeot came up only 7 runs short, but that decisively saw Star take top place from them.

In the single Divisions, Walsall WMF are leading the competition top of the first division by 37 points from highway 3rds with Small Heath Baptist Church a further 2 back. Walsall WMF and Small Heath BC meet next week and this could be the pivotal match of the season. Wilcalre are only a few points from wrapping up division2 and Streetly are certain of being 2nd. In a table complicated by the withdraw of Stockingford, Quinton with 18 points maintained a lead on Leek Wootton whose points have been adjusted for a fixture against Stockingford today (their 2nd). It will all even out the last week of the season when Quinton were due to play Stockingford.

I make no excuse this week focusing on the title races in the lower
divisions however I would be remiss not to mention Kings Heath. Streetly top of the premier division is no easy place to go now days and no one had beaten them in the WCL this year, well not until today. Kings Heath today held Streetly to 193 all out and knocked off the run for 7 down to win by 3 wickets. So there is still a glimmer of hope for the chasing pack headed now by Bablake OB. Olton 3rd face Streetly next week and could with a good win bring Streetly back to the pack, however a Streetly win would knock their rivals on the day out of the race. One to watch
