For this weeks round up of the WCL let’s start at Coppice Lane, the home of Aston Unity who after a year of trying this week clocked up their first win in the WCL. Maddams (71) and Khan (63) led them to 228 for 8, which after Harris took 6 for 28, proved 100 too many for Sheldon Marlbourough. Division 2 is now a division dominated be Marston Green after they put up another 300 run performance against a mid table Castle Bromwich side. With S Ullah 106 and Swaffield 58 the home team cruised to 302 for 8 before Tahir and Virdi with 4 wickets a piece sealed the vicory in emphatic style by 193 runs. With Rugby slipping up and taking only 1 point at Knowle Village, Standard drew level in 2nd place in a thriller at Solihull Municipal, missing their change of second alone by 2 wickets as Stanley with a 20 not out guided Solihull home.

It was a day of low scoring throughout the league as overnight rain softened grounds and affect a few pitches, conditions were then humid and overcast during play such that in general bat was on top of ball. In the premier division only Bablake batting first topped the 200, as they maintained their chase of leaders Streetly. Tony Bristow was the star of the show and the league this week with 176 of Bablakes 292 for 7. Kenilworth , their opponents, have not reached the same heights yet as previous seasons but they clung on and dug in to close 129 for 9, just 1 wicket the margin between Bablake and all 24 points. Streetly meanwhile inserted Atherstone and if one of those matches where the ball won dismissed their visitors for just 137. This was not enough and the lkeague leader picked up another 20 points to maintain a slender lead at the top of the division

Division 1 sees Southam being caught by Walsall WMF who closed the 4 point gap by scoring 245 for 7 before bowling out Pickwick for 129, whilst Southam having won the toss put in Moseley Ashfiled on a rain affect pitch winning a low scoring affair by 5 wickets chasing done 127. The 4 points difference at start of play was therefore wiped out and now both clubs share top at 152 points

Going down the divisions it is always good to have an umpire write at the end of a day’s play, not to complain about behaviour but to praise the teams. This is what happened this week at Aston where umpire, George Mathieson wrote “We see an awful lot of comment these days about lack of spirit of Cricket. I would just like to report that today, the Aston v Copsewood WIW game which Ismail Khan and I umpired, was played in the best of spirit, and was a joy to umpire “. Aston CC also saw joy as S Ahmed turned in the astounding figures of 7 for 6 in that match as Copsewood WIW slumped to 65 all out, and it got even better for the Birmingham club, whose ground is in the shadow of villa park, when Stockingford went down to Thimblemill and only picked up 6 points, Aston now top by 36 points in their hunt for promotion to Division 4.
