Roy Jans Wins Putte Kapellen

Roy Jans of Wanty Group has won the Putte Kapellen race in Belgium.

The final race in the series of ten one day races in Belgium in the Napoleon Games Cup was the Putte Kapellen which was held over a 189km course which started and finished in Putte.

Cofidis, Ettix Quick Step, Lotto Soudal and Team LottoNL-Jumbo sent riders for this race that had a break of eight get away on eleven laps of a 16.25km circuit.

A split in the front group saw Teunissen, Wallays, Napolitano and Livyns get clear and then it was just Mike Teunissen and Jelle Wallays who were ahead with a lead of 2.03 after seven laps, chased by Van Kouwenhoven, Livyns, Vanspeybrouck, Van Goethem and Napolitano.

With 49kms left, the gap was at 1.09 before Wallays took the sprint and it had dropped to thirteen seconds going into the last thirty kilometres.

Teunissen got reeled in and the peloton had Wallays in their sights before there was a crash iu the peloton with 22.5kms left.

At least twenty riders went down with Dimitri Claeys hitting a fence. Thnakfully, most were able to get back on their way and Wallays was caught by the front part of the peloton which was about 25 riders strong.

Onto the final lap and after Amaury Capiot took the sprint,  three riders in Tosh Van Der Sande,  Dron and Marchant stole a march taking nineteen seconds with 10kms remaining on a cloudy and cold afternoon.

Riding through the back streets of Putte and the gap had gone out to 38 seconds over the peloton and fourteen over a chasing group.

The gap was at seven seconds with three kilometres left so Zdenek Stybar went after the break and with 1.4kms left], passed them.

Under the flam rouge and Stybar was joined by a Lotto rider. They were busy playing cat and mouse when there was a big attack down the left and Roy Jans of Wanty Group took the win in 3.54.01 ahead of Timothy Dupont and Moreno Hofland.
