Colbrelli Wins Tre Valis Varesine

Sonny Colbrelli of Bardiani CSF has won the Tre Valis Varesine race in Italy.

The 96th edition of this race (the Three Valleys of Varese) on the UCI European Tour was a 192.9km stage from Saronno to Varese and a race won by Dan Martin in 2010 and Vincenzo Nibali last year.

Two hundred riders including riders from ten World Tour teams took part in the race and three in Grosu, Dempster & Boev were able to get away and take a lead of nine minutes.

That lead had dropped to 6.40 by the time, they reached the city circuit with nine laps of 12.8kms to go.

A lap later and the gap had fallen to 5.03 on a sunny day and with five laps left the gap was down to two minutes.

With four laps to go and 50kms left, the peloton had the trio in sight and four kilometres later they were caught.

Four riders including Slagter and Jeremy Roy got in front with six more joining.

Taking care going past a car on the circuit going the wrong way which had crashed into a police motorbike, leaving the officer with a pelvic fracture, according to Italian television, the break was still clear with thirty kilometres to go but was soon caught.

BMC, who are losing Taylor Phinney to Cannondale Drapac, took over on the front with just over fifteen kilometres to go.

Onto the last lap and there was no panic amongst the peloton, so Diego Ulissi attacked followed by Brambilla and Keukelire.

There ws 2kms to go and Gianluca Brambila attacked before Cannondle-Drapac's Rigoberto Uran put in a raid which saw him go first under the flam rouge, followed by Ulissi.

Gavazzi lead it out as did Sonny Colbrelli of Bardiani CSF who went down the middle and took the win ahead of Ulissi of Lampre and Gavazzi of Androni.
