Sir Bradley Wiggins has smashed the UCI World Hour Record

Wiggins, the 2012 Tour De France winner, rode at the Lee Valley Velodrome in London in an  attempt to better the distance of 52.937km set by Alex Dowsett in Manchester on May 2nd.

The Belgian born rider needed to complete 221 laps if he is to become the new record holder and he started off on his Pinarello bike riding at 52.7kmh for the first ten laps.

Wiggins was on lap 36 after ten minutes but sped up slightly to go thirty seconds ahead of the record and forty two seconds up by lap 72, riding at 54.5kmh.

His average speed started to increase and it was at 54.601kmh after 91 laps and 25 minutes and a minute and nine seconds above record pace.

After half an hour, Wiggins was on lap 109 and ten minutes later, he was on lap 145.

His speed was 54.616kmh after forty five minutes as every lap was cheered on by a crowd of 5,500, who had snapped up all the tickets in seven minutes,

This was now a question of by how much he would smash the record by.

With 53 minutes gone, Wiggins was on lap 192 and some 55 seconds ahead of the world record and was flying round the track.

Wiggins passed Dowsett's record and completed 219 laps and the world record was his with a record of 54.526km.

Wiggins said: "I'm just glad it is done.  My wife and children know more about air pressure than anyone. I am so proud to be in the company of the Miguel Indurain's and Chris Boardman's.

"This really tops everything off and just to come back and do it on on this track is memorable.

"It was so difficult to block out the noise. I thank everyone for buying a ticket and everyone who has supported me plus my wife and children who have been my rock for the last fifteen years."
