It rained hard on Friday and Saturday morning was not the best but in the spirit of “get the game on” a majority of fixtures were played to conclusion as the sun made a cameo appearance on Saturday afternoon
It was a low scoring affair at Handsworth where Imran Qadir Nat Longhorne, and Carleon Brome picked up 3 wickets a piece for the visitors as the home side managed 161 all out in 40 overs. Four Oaks Saints however did not capitalise on that bowling performance and the bowler had the best of the day after tea too, Clinton Folkes 4 for 21, and Clement Smith 3 for 20 in a total of 108 all out. Handsworth went top when Bedworth also failed to chase down a seemingly modest total of 156 at Rugby to close 104 all out, Henry Wilkins with a 5 for 11.
Looking at the divisions were first and second teams merged in 2015, division 4 sees no team having won all 3 games, Nuneaton 2nds topping the table, whilst division 5 see Sheldon Marlbourgh 2nds, leading Collycroft 1sts and Attock 3rds in another competitive looking division.
After 3 weeks of cricket the league is yet to receive a disciplinary report from an umpire, and on Saturday the umpires at Southam turned up for what appeared an unremarkable bottom half fixture in Division 1. On the field Nathan Hooker made 74 for Southam and his opposing captain James Bradin 54 for Bronze. Bronze a competitive 172 all out lost to the batting of Hooker and Heath (64) and to the excellent bowling of Usama 7 for 41, making this week’s top performances. The umpires did call the captains and team together after the match ,not for a disciplinary issue but to congratulate both captains and their teams for the spirit in which the game was played.
So the last word this week, is a thank you from the league to those teams and the others in the WCL who play to the spirit of the game and to all the grounds men and helpers who got the game on this weekend.
