Etixx Quick Step's Tony Martin has won the Volta ao Algarve em Bicicleta time trial in Portugal.

Geraint Thomas was in the leader's jersey after a superb victory on Stage 2 and was the last man down the ramp for a nineteen kilometre time trial from Vila do Bispo to Sagres.

The first rider to set off on a course which started off hilly before dropping down and then back up again, was Carlos Ribeiro of the W52 team but he was passed by his team mate Gustavo Veloso, who started two minutes behind Ribeiro, who set the time to be of 23.30.

Yves Lampaert of Etixx Quick Step quickly finished in 22.31 at an average speed of 50,629kmh before Russian time trial specialist Anton Vorobyev (Katusha) finished in 22.10.

His time lasted until Movistar's Adriano Mallori came home in 21.51.

Favourite for the stage, not surprisingly was Tony Martin of Etixx Quick Step and the German was ten seconds faster than Mallori at the intermediate check point but slowed on the second half of the course and finished in a time of 21:51.071 which was quicker than Mallori's 21:51.474 and enough to give Martin the stage victory.

At 3.32pm local time, Geraint Thomas of Team Sky went down the ramp and finished three seconds down on Martin's time in 21.54 to finish third on the stage and keep his overall lead.
