Team Sky's Ben Swift finished third on the second stage of the Vuelta a Espana this afternoon.

A 181.4km stage from Pamplona to Viana was the stage set for the riders today and saw a break of Arcmendia (Caja Rural), Chacon (Andalucia) and  Ignatyev (Katusha) who took the first Intermediate sprint with Arcmendia take the climb  at Alto de la chapela.

In humid conditions before the rain started, they were swallowed up by the peloton with 12 kms to go. Sergey Lagutin of Vacansoleil tried next but he was caught with 4kms to go.

This set up a tight finish and John Degenklob of Argo Shimano took the win in a time of 4:38:40 ahead of Orica Green Edge's Allan Davies and Team Sky's Ben Swift.
