Dame Sarah Storey has missed out on the World Hour Record.

The Paralympian champion was bidding to beat Dutchwoman Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel record of 46.065km set in 2003 but at the London Velodrome, she rode rode 45.502km.

That was enough to set a new British and Paralympian C5 record and Storey told the BBC: "It was definitely the hardest hour of my life.

"I came in here hoping to go further than 46km, but to break the British record, I'm really chuffed.

"It's not as far as Leontien but to miss out to her is no bad thing.

“It’s a once in a lifetime experience, the holy grail of cycling," she said. "But I won’t be trying it again this week, that’s for sure."
