According to the BBC, The Isle of Man has submitted a bid to host the British Cycling Championships in 2016.

The island in the Irish Sea has produced the last two British road race champions in Peter Kennaugh and Mark Cavendish and Isle of Man Cycling Association (IoMCA) chairman Richard Fletcher: "A successful bid would enhance the island's reputation as a world-class cycling destination which is able to stage world- class sporting events."

The Island staged the Intenational Cycle Week for nearly seventy years and Economic Development Minister Laurence Skelly said: "It would be incredible to watch our British and Olympic champions race on home soil.

"An annual cycling festival would be a lasting legacy of this event and would no doubt inspire future generations.

"It would also prove an economic engine for tourism."

The bid is backed by the Manx Government and the local Tourist Board.
