Steve Collins, the coach of Alex Dowsett has claimed that Sir Bradley Wiggins' World Hour Record is illegal.

Wiggins smashed Dowsett's record with a distance of 54.456kms but Collins has claimed that his Pinarello bike was not up to regulation as it featured custom made 3D prinited aerobars and the help he received from British Cycling was bordered on the illegal.

"One of the sad bits about it was that Bradley's bike wasn't in production," Collins said to BBC Radio Essex. "For attempts like that it should all be production available so you can buy it off the shelf.

"You can't get 3D-printed handlebars moulded to your own arms to make it easier for your own attempt.

"He also had the help of British Cycling which, well, is not allowed. It was a bit strange to see British Cycling, like [coach] Shane Sutton, getting so involved last night when he doesn't work for team Wiggins. I'm not sure how that's allowed."

In a statement, British Cycling said:  “All at British Cycling are extremely proud that British riders have broken successive records in one of cycling’s most iconic challenges, something which we believe reflects the current strength of cycling in Britain.

“Alex and Sir Bradley have given us moments to celebrate and remember in recent weeks which – along with events like the 2016 UCI Track Championships at the Lee Valley Velopark – help cycling reach new audiences and attract a new generation of potential champions to our great sport.

“Alex Dowsett set his world record at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, the home of British Cycling, where he received technical and operational support from British Cycling personnel.”
