Degenkolb Wins Vuelta a Espana Stage 12

John Degenkolb has his third win after taking victory on stage twelve of the Vuelta a Espana.

A 166.4km stage which started and finished with eight laps around Logroño saw Matthias Krizek as the lone breaker.

The Cannondale rider and former Austrian Champion took a lead of 5.20 after 28kms and with 78kms to go was 5.30 clear.

Into the final sixty kilometres and he was only 3.44 clear and with one lap of 20.8kms left, Krizek was only 1.23 ahead.

The peloton put the hammer down on a stage for the sprinters and with 12.1kms to go, Krizek was caught.

Tinkoff Saxo working for race leader Alberto Contador were on the front at speeds of 62km/h.

Manuel Quinizato of BMC went early but was caught with 1.8kms to go and Tinkoff Saxo resumed on the front.

Out of nowhere, Ferrari of Lampri went and but the sprint was on and  John Degenkolob of Giant Shimano held off everyone including Tom Boonen to win in 4.11.18. Behind them, there was a crash which held up a number of riders.

Boonen was second ahead of Gaurnini and Peter Sagan.

Alberto Contador continues to lead the race.
