Mark Cavendish of Etixx Quick Step took victory on the Clasica de Almeria

This annual 183.3-kilometre UCI 1.1-ranked race took place in Spain with a strong field.

Five riders were in the break but did not work together and they instead each opted to attack each other leading to Katusha and Etixx Quick Step catching them with forty kilometres to go.

With two kilometres remaining, there was a big crash which took down many and held up a good number including the likes of Tyler Farrar.

Therer was still plenty of riders who avoided the crash to contest a bunch sprint which Cavendish won in 4.36.19 ahead of Juan Jose Lobato of Movistar, Mark Renshaw of Etixx-QuickStep, Valerio Agnoli of Astana and Edward Theuns of Topsport Vlaanderen, followed by Alexander Porsev of Katuasha, AG2R's Lloyd Mondory, Grega Bole of CCC Sprandi and Rudiger Selig  of Katusha.

British rider Steve Cummings of MTN Qhubeka finished in 126th place, some 5.15 down.
