Coventry Sphinx came back from a goal down to win the Polymac League Cup with a 3-1 victory against Westfields at Walsall FC.

Sphinx attacked the away end at the Bescot Stadium for the opening half and it was an opening period that saw Danny McSheffrey's side who had over-come Causeway United in the semi-final, attack from the start.

Tom Muldoon was twice involved early on, firstly crossing for Terry Ward to head over in the fifth minute and two minutes later, providing a centre for Callum Woodward to volley over.

Three corners in quick succession followed before the Herefordshire side created their first major chance as Sam Harrison fired across the goal in the 19th minute.

Five minutes later and against the run of play, Westfields were awarded a free kick on the right and Phil Glover used his height to head his side in front.

As so often as happened this season, being a goal down, seemed to wake up Sphinx who created chances for Ruff, Murdock and Kyle Rhodes who headed over in the 38th minute.

Tom Sparey sliced over his own bar for a corner and Murdock headed a Kinder cross over before the break.

In the 50th minute, Sphinx drew level thanks to good work from Murdock on the left, picking out the unmarked Adam Kinder who delighted the travelling Sphinx support by stroking home from twelve yards.

As temperatures in North Birmingham dropped, the excitement on the pitch was keeping the Sphinx support warm. A 64th minute free kick from Woodward was cleared over the bar by a Westfields defender for a corner which Kinder headed not far wide.

By now, every Sphinx player was playing their part in getting the team going forward and in the 73rd minute, the Sphinx support went crazy as Kyle Rhodes let rip with a thirty yard shot, following a free kick, that absolutely flew into the net.

Sensing that the cup was coming to Coventry, Sphinx made sure when Murdock stormed down the right and delivered a peach of a cross for Aron Donaldson to head home from five yards in the 85th minute.

Jerome Murdock was sent off with two minutes of normal time remaining but Sphinx were the ones picking up the trophy for the first time in their history.
