Missed Chances Cost Us - Hopkins

Coventry Sphinx boss Luke Hopkins felt that missed chances cost his side during their 5-0 home defeat by high fliers Basford United.

Hopkins told the Sphinx website:"For the first thirty minutes, I thought we competed well and moved the ball nicely. Ash Cain kept beating his man and putting balls in box, but we didn’t have the bodies in there to cause the problems though.

"We conceded a poor goal which could have been kept under control twice but we gave it away and a straight ball undone us. It was a good finish and there was not much Curtis in goal could do about it.

"The second goal was a foul on the keeper all day long. It is a standard thing now that keepers cant be touched and when its your keeper you want him protected and when its their keeper it frustrates you.but that’s football

"2-0 down and five to play in the first half, we have three chances to be going in 3-2 up on a good day but we didn’t take our chances and again, it falls back to the season long issue which I need to sort if we want to compete.

"We don't have a thirty goal a season, experienced striker, who can play, pass on his knowledge and do the business, they are rare and when you get one, you need to keep hold of him.

At half-time, we re-grouped and came out with an action plan and for the first 10 minutes it was working and we were looking to get back in the match.

"They had a few bits of last ditch defending but I felt an early goal and with nothing to lose, lets push on and get a point maybe.

"But we got involved in actions we didn’t need to, some actions you can't defend and no matter how much ability and talent you have if you don’t apply it in the correct manner, you about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

"It was hard enough playing against them with 11, they move the ball into the right areas and are deadly in the box, it’s a simple as that. As much as you dig in and are up to the cause, it was too little too late.

"Two bad results in the last two weeks and some of the younger lads are learning how pitches and conditions can influence results, but we go again and not let a couple of bad results take away the many positives of the season.

"if we can get a result next week than would be two losses in seven games, which to me, isn't going to win the league, but is an average mid table place.

However, I want more and a higher finish than that."
