Coventry Sphinx went down to a 2-1 defeat at Westfields tonight.

For their longest league journey of the season to Allpay Park in Hereford, Danny McSheffrey fielded a changed side from the one which had lost at Tipton on Saturday.

Sphinx battled well but the star of the show was referee Darren Wilding. The Worcester based official left the whole of Allpay Park stunned when he awarded a 21st minute.

Mark Hibbard took the spot kick but Carl O'Neill went the right way and dived to his right to save.

Westfields might not have deserved the penalty but they deserved the goal which came in the 25th minute thanks a stunning shot on the turn from Jamie Filkins flying into the net.

Andy Wilson King and Kelvin Phillips created chances before Filkins thumped the bar in the 42nd minute with a rasping shot from Firkin who had got to a ball from the threat that was Jamie Edwards.

Needless cautions continued and in the 54th minute, Jamie McAteer was cautioned for an alleged trip inside the area.

This gave Westfields a second penalty and this time, Richard Kear made no mistake.

The goal brought out Sphinx's battling character and with Casey Caggini pulling the strings in midfield, attacks on the Westfield goal increased in frequency.

Arron Donaldson flashed a shot just past the far post and Jamie McAteer somehow sent a 71st minute ball over the crossbar from close range.

With nine minutes left, Phillips had a header from a Caggini cross headed off the line.

The game was into stoppage time when a Phillips shot on the turn was deflected for a corner that was sent not far wide.

Danny McSheffrey was forced to come on as a substitute and in the third minute of stoppage time, He got to a Donaldson ball played into the six yard box and cut the ball back to Chris Wilson-King who hammered it in to the net.

There was no time left for Sphinx to go for an equaliser but a good second half will give them confidence when the sides meet again in the League Cup Final on May 11th.

Sphinx play their final home game of the season at home to Shifnal Town on Saturday before facing away games at Studley, Highgate and Coalville next week.
