The Elite League Champions Are Beaten

Coventry Blaze were presented with the Elite League title tonight but lost 6-4 to Belfast Giants at the Sky Dome.

The visitors took the lead on 5.56 through Brandon Benedict and went further in front on 14.45 with a short handed Evan Cheverie goal.

Greg Owen, assisted by last night's hat-trick hero at Edinburgh - Adam Calder and Brian Lee on 37.18 but Belfast restored their two goal margin when Evan Cheverie hit his second on 39.43.

3-1 Belfast led going into the third period and on 42.08, Luke Fulghum scored, assisted by Brian Lee who made it three all when he found the net, assisted by Calder and Fulghum on 46.15.

Less than a minute later and in front of a record crowd of 3,051, Blaze took the lead when Brad Cruickshank scored assisted by Danny Stewart.

Belfast hit back. Michael Jacobsen equalised with a powerplay goal on
48.06 and four minutes later, Brandon Benedict hit a fifth for the Giants.

Jeff Szwez scored a powerplay goal on 54.59 to give Belfast a 6-4 victory but it was Coventry who picked up the league title.
