Coventry Sphinx are through to the third round of the Midland Combination League Cup after a 3-2 victory at Friar Lane and Epworth.

Sphinx, who face Salford City in the FA Vase on January 19th or 20th,needed only three minutes to take the lead through Captain Dave Drennan after good work by Mace,Scott and Jerome Murdock who added a second in the fifth minute.

The Leicester based side pulled one back in the seventh minute through a Francis Lynch lob as the Sphinx defence and support appealed for offside.

In the 35th minute,a great run by Murdock cut the ball back for Robbie Scott to hit a third but less than a minute later,Kelvin Phillips reduced the arrears from inside the area.

Sphinx brought on Covsupport sponsored Adam Kibbs for the second half. This was Knibbs first team outing for fourteen weeks and the left back worked well in defence.

At times, Paul Charnley's side were pegged back in the second half as the home side pushed for an equaliser. But Sphinx stuck to their task and hold on to win.

Other scores in the Midland Alliance League Cup were
Alvechurch 3-0 Rocester, Loughborough 0-2 Stratford, Market Drayton 1-2 Shifnal, Oldbury 1-2 Studley, Racing Club Warwick 1-2 Boldmere, Westfields 4-5 Oadby.

Leamington's FA Trophy game at Halifax Town was again postponed. The winners have been drawn away to Bishop Stortford who thrashed former winners Canvey Island 8-0.
