Coventry City Ladies snatched a dramatic late winner with Cherelle Archibald's goal coming six minutes into stoppage time as the Sky Blues edged a 4-3 thriller away to Rotherham.
Archibald came off the bench to score her first of the season and grab all three points after the hosts had fought back from a three goal deficit. Robyn James, Helen Dermody and a Rotherham own goal had seen the Sky Blues take what looked like an insurmountable lead.
Paul Cudby watched as his rampant side roared out of the gates into a 3-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes. Leanne McKenna's cross was diverted goalward off the head of a Rotherham defender as Coventry broke the deadlock after a good spell of early pressure. Dermody dragged her shot across goal a few moments later but James was on hand to steer her effort into the net for City's second as Rotherham struggled to get up to the furious early pace.
Dermody notched the third direct from a corner as she curled in wicked effort that flashed into the net as the keeper could barely move. Jade Formaston was substituted on twenty minutes after picking up an injury in the opening exchanges, the loss of the speedy winger represented a glimmer of light for the hosts and they quickly found a way back into the game striking a free kick into the top corner of Netty Manca's goal before half time.
The plucky hosts were up for the challenge in the second half and, after two quick goals, looked the most likely winners. Coventry were forced to ride their luck and held on deep into stoppage time where Archibald popped up to score in the midst of a goalmouth scramble. Cudby's thoughts now turn to Copsewood who are the visitors to Westwood Heath on Thursday evening, kick-off is 19:45.
