City Ladies Still Unbeaten

Coventry City Ladies dropped their first points of the season in a tight and well contested encounter at Goodrich Stadium on Sunday but continue to top the table.

In a lively opening spell Wolves's keeper Becky Thomas was called into action to save from Robyn James and Nat Wilcox, but there was little she could have done had Formaston's volley from 12 yards not scorched past the wrong side of the post.

On 20 mins skipper Lynch latched onto Nikki Miles's square pass and sent a dipping shot a foot over the bar and moments later Archibald's strike from 22yards brought another good save by Thomas at the foot of the post.

The Sky Blues seemed to have a good shout for a penalty on the half hour when Robyn James looked to have her legs taken away from behind as she shaped to shoot, but the referee waved away the appeals.

Two minutes later, the best chance of the half fell to Wolves when Rebecca Large was played through on goal and brought a terrific one handed save from Netty Manca to turn the ball just wide of the post.

City started the second half brightly with Dermody turning Formaston's cross just wide and minutes later from a free kick brought a flying save from Thomas when the ball looked to be heading for the top corner.

The home side though were coming more into the game and City's back four were frequently stretched by the tricky Hayley Packer and the pace of Sophie Walker whenever Wolves countered. With 20 minutes remaining, Walker blocked Lynch's clearance and Rebecca Large raced onto the rebound but drove past the post when one on one with Manca, though referee Rob Allen judged that Manca got something on the ball and awarded a corner. Manca though, definitely came to City's rescue on 75 mins when producing a terrific save with her feet to deny Sophie Walker from 8 yards as Wolves applied some late pressure.

Both Lynch and McKenna sent long range shots dipping narrowly over the cross bar as the game closed out, but that had been the story throughout. For all the Sky Blues possession and neat approach play, they failed to really penetrate and were reduced to long range efforts whereas Wolves probably created the better chances and were well worth their share of the points.
