Coventry City were beaten in a home local derby against Aston Villa tonight.

In front of a good sized crowd at Sphinx Drive, Villa, managed by former City boss Stewart Wilson and his assistant Neil Wilson, who had helped take City Ladies into the Womens Premier League in 2003, took a third minute lead when referee Martin Hancock spotted a shove. Natalie Gibson stepped up and beat Wood from the resulting spot kick.

City came winning a corner and then a rasping 22nd minute drive from the edge of the box by Leanne McKenna was brilliantly pushed over by Villa keeper Naomi Bruton.

Sue Wood was forced to pull off a cracking save diving to her left to push away a 49th minute header from a corner before getting down to deny Carly Davies.

Chances continued to be at a premium for both sides with Kelly Clarke heading over from close range in the 69th minute.Kirsty Robson had City's first shot of the half with a 73rd minute long ranger which was not as close as Emma Follis' cross from the right which bounced off the crossbar.

Neither keeper was unduly worried and Villa left with the points.

City Ladies are at home to Curzon Ashton on Sunday. Kick off at Sphinx Drive is at 2pm.
