Coventry City Ladies hopes of winning the Womens Premier League Northern Division remain on course after a 2-1 victory over Leicester City Women at Coventry Sphinx.

City, who have lost coach Barry Powell to Super League Birmingham City, were straight on the attack with a Helen Dermody shot being blocked in the opening seconds.

Natasha Meade did the same and in the 12th minute, Meade was on to a through ball and slipped it past Sue Wood for the opening goal.

The Sky Blues levelled on the half hour mark, when Helen Dermody sent a stunning 35 yard lob over the keeper from a corner.

Katy Ward fired wide before Courtney Sweetman-Kirk had a shot away. City broke up the other end and were denied a 44th minute penalty by referee Andrew Stickley.

Karen Clough had a 50th minute shot saved and Chloe Jones had her effort pushed over as both sides looked for a second goal.

To help their search for a goal, both managers made changes with Paul Cudby sending on Crissy Torkildsen who is running the London Marathon on Sunday.

The change worked for the Sky Blues assubstitute Danni Saulter was able to get onto a ball down the right and drive a shot into the net to put City 2-1 up with fifteen minutes remaining.

Durrant and the hard working McKenna had chances before Leicester had a free kick inside the area awarded for a back pass, was deflected for an 85th minute corner as the Sky Blues kept up their bid for promotion with a victory.
