City Ladies Beat Leicester

Last updated : 06 March 2009 By Adam Etheridge

Coventry City Ladies endured a frustrating hour against local rivals Leicester City as they trailed to 1-0 to Linda Scott's 1st minute opener. The Sky Blues created a raft of chances and laid siege to their opponent's goal only to be denied by a string of fine saves from Foxes 'keeper Lucy Clarke. The visitors finally succumb to the pressure when Abi Cockayne was on hand to convert a Jade Formaston corner leading to a flood of goals for the City as they went on to coast to a 5-1 victory.

No sooner had Cockayne hauled the Sky Blues level then debutant Kirsty Robson fired them in front. The 61st minute strike came at the climax of a stellar solo run in which the former Nottingham Forest striker, now in her second stint with Coventry, picked up the ball in centre circle. Again Clarke was on hand to play spoiler but Robson was able to steer home at the second time of asking.

A third goal wasn't long in coming as in the 65th minute Helen Dermody finished confidently from around the penalty spot after a sweeping move involving Formaston and Danni Saulter. 10 minutes later and Saulter provided Coventry's fourth. A stunning solo effort saw the classy midfielder beat 4 challenges on a run from inside her own half before lobbing the helpless Clarke.

Substitute Cherelle Archibald headed the fifth and final goal of the evening as she rose highest to power home a Dermody corner. The victory moves Coventry back to the top of the table & leaves Leicester rooted to the bottom. Derby weren't in action so whilst the Sky Blues enjoy a 1 point lead the Rams have 2 games in hand.
