Blaze Beaten By Steelers

Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey team were beaten 2-1 by Elite League leaders Sheffield Steelers at the Sky Dome tonight.

With the Super Bowl which the Blaze players will be watching with the Coventry Cassidy Jets team at the Isle Of Capri casino, only hours away, it's another all American sport that pulls a full house into the Coventry Sky Dome.

In a must win Elite League game, second placed Coventry Blaze end the first period 2-0 down to the league leaders, conceding the first after 3.54 through Joe Talbot from an Ashley Tait assist and an unassisted goal by Ryan Finnerty on 5.00.

The second goal sees Blaze Coach Paul Thompson call a time out and he clearly gives the defence a lashing.

The Blaze don't create much and it's Sheffield's 400 fans who end the first period singing.

The second period has three mass fights, the last coming after Jon Weaver pulls one back on 33.38. With Weaver taking a late hit after scoring, Paul Thompson has a heated discussion with referee Darnell.

Ex Blaze net minder Jody Lehman pulls off a string of fine saves to keep the Blaze from drawing level. Lehman can now qualify for Team GB under residency rules and Paul Thompson is said to be considering him along with a number of overseas players in a bid to improve the British team.

The last time, GB called up overseas players was in 1938 when they won the World Cup with a team of British born players who were living in America.

The third period ends with another fight. Blaze pulled their net minder JF Perras with thirty seconds left and despite having 14 shots to Sheffield's nine, they failed to get the equaliser.

Lehman won the Sheffield Man Of The Match for an outstanding display, whilst Carlyle Lewis was the Blaze's best player.

The defeat virtually ends any hope of Blaze retaining their Elite League title.

Other scores tonight: Manchester Phoenix 2-4 Nottingham Panthers, Cardiff Devils 1-2 Hull Stingrays.

On Wednesday night, the Blaze are in Belfast to take on the Giants in the Challenge Cup Semi-Final second leg. The first leg finished 1-1.

Saturday February 7th, sees a trip for the Blaze to Altrincham to play Manchester Phoenix (face off at 6.30pm) and on Sunday, Cardiff Devils visit the Sky Dome (face off at 6pm).
