City Go Through

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 0-1 COVENTRY CITY BY KEV MONKS

Coventry City progressed to the FA Cup Fourth Round with a solitary Gary McSheffrey goal.

"You want to try this place in the winter" said a turnstile operator to me on a lovely warm day as I made my way into the Withdean Stadium before the 2-2 draw back in September.

And so,thanks to the FA Cup,900 City supporters got an opportunity for another visit to Sussex By The Sea on a cold, damp and pretty horrible January day.

The sooner Brighton get in their new home at Falmer the better for all concerned. Playing in an athletics stadium,to me is not condusive for watching football and for this game, the 900 City supporters were housed some fifty yards behind the nearest goal.

Micky Adams back on his old stomping ground was forced to make changes from the team that had beat Wolves. With Marton Fulop not allowed to played by Spurs,Clayton Ince took over in goal The other change saw a return for Stephen Hughes replacing Isaac Osbourne who is out for the season with a knee ligament rupture.
Don Hutchison was signed for an extra week but he was officially "injured", giving rise to rumours that the Scot did not want to be cup-tied if he and his agent could not agree a deal with the Sky Blues this week.
The man likely to do that deal - Geoffrey Robinson was in the away end shaking hands before the game got underway and the MP watched on as, in the seventh minute,Stern John failed to make the best of a chance following a Gary McSheffrey cross from the right.

Clayton Ince looked comfortable in the City goal. The Trinidadian pushed an Alexandre Frutos shot over for a nineteenth minute corner and got down to save from Kazim Richards when the flag-kick was not properly cleared.

This may have been an FA Cup tie but it was more reminiscent of a dour Championship game as chances were in short supply and when they did occur they tended to fall for the home side.

Richard Duffy was booked for clattering Frutos in the 28th minute and was involved nine minutes later when City won two corners.

In the last minute of the half,Clayton Ince made another good save this time diving to his left.

Whatever Micky Adams said at the break worked as the Sky Blues took the lead four minutes after the restart.

Stern John played the ball out to Gary McSheffrey on the right. City's top scorer bore down on goal before slotting the ball past Florent Chaigneau and into the bottom corner.

McSheffrey had a 55th minute effort saved and for the next twenty five minutes,it was the home side who had the majority of the possession. Brighton might have had the play but they came up against a resolute Coventry defence.

Richard Shaw in his 351st first team appearance was in commanding form and forced the Albion manager to replace the ineffective forwards.

Micky Adams made his first change in the 72nd minute when he took off Stern John who had given his best and brought on Andy Whing.

Six minutes later,a second change saw Andy Morrell come on for Gary McSheffrey.

City weathered two last ditch corners after having Hughes and Adebola cautioned by referee Lee Probert who was in charge of City's defeat at Preston seven days ago.

This was certainly not a classic but it was pleasing to see a workmanlike performance from the Sky Blues and a place in the fourth round.
