Trust Issue Council Statement

The Leader of Coventry City Council has promised to keep Sky Blues supporters updated with developments at the football club directly involving the Council following a meeting held with supporters at the Council House yesterday (9 October).

Leader Cllr Ken Taylor and Cabinet Member for City Development, Cllr Kevin Foster, met members of the Sky Blue Trust after they requested talks following Paul Fletcher's shock resignation as Managing Director of the football club.

"We made it clear to the supporters that the real issue at stake is the depth of financial problems facing the football club," said Cllr Taylor. "We're willing to consider any reasonable offer for the Arena shares, but there is no way that the Council can invest public money in the football club.

"We also talked about the importance, from all our points of view, of ensuring that potential investors can demonstrate they have management experience that can strengthen the football club and the Arena's ongoing business, and can bring forward the necessary finance to deliver this - no bidder has so far been able to demonstrate this.

"There aren't going to be any easy answers ahead, but we did make a commitment to the supporters that we would, where we could, keep them updated on any developments."

Rachael Brown, Chairman of the Sky Blue Trust said "since October 2003 we have worked with the City Council to ensure Coventry has a first class full-time professional football team and we are glad the Council are still working towards this aim. We hope a successful conclusion can be reached to resolve the current situation Coventry City Football Club finds itself in and look forward to further conversations with the City Council and other relevant parties".
