Time For A Manager Who Can Get The Best Out Of The Players

And so this morning, the tenure of Andy Thorn as Coventry City manager came to an end when he was sacked.

The former Crystal Palace and Newcastle defender had been appointed on the back of public support on April 28th 2011 after some good performances whilst he was caretaker manager after replacing the also dismissed Aidy Boothroyd.

However, Thorn soon had his hands tied by owners SISU and was only able to bring in two keepers and not properly replace the likes of Keiren Westwood, Aron Gunnarsson, Ben Turner and Marlon King,

This left Thorn needing to get the best out of every player he had available and this was to be his downfall.

City went on to lose 28 points after being in winning positions, playing a Diamond formation which seemed to confuse his players and was not to the strengths of those available, and with only one away win at Hull City for the long suffering City support to shout about, questions were raised amongst City fans as to whether Thorn was actually doing the one thing that he needed to do.

Many expected Thorn to fall on his sword when relegation was confirmed against Doncaster Rovers with probably the worst home performance since City moved to the Ricoh Arena but whether City could not afford to sack him then or not, he stayed on through the summer.

He was given money to bring in out of contract players and after a reasonable pre-season. City started their season in the Third Tier of English football for 49 years.

The boos were heard after the 1-1 draw at Yeovil Town and seven days later, after City had thrown away their third lead in a week, it was clear that the frustrations of the City support annoyed that the manager was not getting the best out of his players, were close to boiling over when Bury were allowed to leave the Ricoh Arena with a point.

It does not matter what level the team plays in, a manager has to get the best out of his available players and now the sacking of Andy Thorn has given the Sky Blues a chance to find someone who can do just that.
