Coventry City manager Andy Thorn returned to the Ryton training ground today to prepare for pre-season training.

Thorn's new assistant Richard Shaw start his new job  and he will meet up with the new look backroom staff of Lee Carsley and Steve Ogrizovic.

Thorn is close to appointing a new physiotherapist following the departure of Michael McBride to Bristol City. Sam Heathcote has started his new job as fitness coach, a job he helped with last season while he was an intern.

Speaking to the CT, Thorn said, “All the preparation and hard work organising the pre-season has all been done and it’s just important that with new staff coming in we sort out what people are doing and get a feel for the place again before we get going on Sunday.

Thorn has told his players to report back to Ryton on July 1st as is usual even though the new new League One season starts a week earlier than the Championship season.

Thorn warned his players that they will be thrown straight into hard training, saying, “It won’t be a Sunday where the players are having a jolly day out. Everyone will be weighed and tested, and off we go. The players will be straight into it.”

“We’ll have a chat about what is expected and what will be different to last year, and we’ll go from there. We’ll have morning and afternoon sessions and we’ll be up and running and looking to get the boys as fit as we can for the new season.”

With his backroom staff in place, Thorn will now turn his attention to recruiting new players. He was frustrated earlier by the transfer embargo, but now it has been lifted, he can get on with the job within the financial restraints in which he has to work.

“We’re talking to a few,” confirmed Thorn, but he will also be talking to Richard Keogh and Martin Cranie in an attempt to keep them at the club.
