Swindon police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a group of Coventry City fans were allegedly attacked by a group of Swindon fans in the town after the 2-2 draw last Saturday.

Five City fans were hurt after objects, including bricks, signs and traffic cones were thrown at them. The incident occurred at around 5:20pm near The County Ground. The Coventry fans say they were surrounded by a larger group of Swindon fans in Queens Drive. One City fans received a cut to his head after being struck by a brick.

They were on their way back to their coach when they claim they were ambushed. No 999 calls about the incident were logged, but the incident took place near a local ambulance depot. A spokesman for the Great Western Ambulance Service said a small number of fans were treated for cuts and bruises. No one was seriously hurt.

The West Midlands Police’s force football unit tweeted that there had been two incidents of disorder and five fans had been hurt.

There were other unsavoury incidents outside the ground as well as at the train station in which a large group of Swindon hooligans were beaten away by City supporters, but the British Transport Police said they had no record of violence in the station, but a spokesman said that it may not have been reported to them.

Inspector Adrian Burt, of Wiltshire Police, said, “We received several calls from the public at about 5.20pm on Saturday afternoon about disorder in the Queen’s Drive area of Swindon after the Swindon-Coventry match. We quickly dispatched officers to the scene.

“A small group of Coventry fans alleged they were set upon by a number of Swindon fans while returning to their coach. We engaged with both sets of supporters, but no formal complaints were forthcoming. No arrests have been made.

“We would like to appeal for any witnesses to contact Gablecross Police Station on 101.”
