New Republic of Ireland international manager Steve Staunton has said that he would like Gary McSheffrey to play for the Irish Republic. The Coventry born England U21 international has Irish relatives and Staunton is prepared to use the "granny rule" to bring in new players.

Reading's Dave Kitson and Swansea's Lee Trundle are just two targets said the former City defender who added: “I’ll speak to Dave Kitson in the near future and see what his position is. Lee is scoring goals, is 29 and you never know what will happen. I’m not ruling anybody out at this stage.

“Gary McSheffrey also qualifies so he’s another lad we must take a close look at over the coming weeks and months."
