Iain Dowie was appointed as manager of Coventry City and shown off to a press conference at the Ricoh Arena.

Paul Fletcher welcomed the Northern Irish international to the club and said that everything had not gone according to plan and halfway through the selection process, the Board decided to react. Mr Fletcher added that Iain Dowie ticked every box in the criteria.

Iain Dowie said that this was the right opportunity for him to get back into management. "Coventry are a club with a huge tradition and great players such as Hutchison and Hudson. "It will be very tough to get into the Premiership but there is potential to push on.

"I chose Coventry over Leicester. The fact that Coventry showed desire to get me here has delighted me. I am delighted to be here at an exciting time.

"Of course there is pressure (from Operation Premiership) and it is a tough job but if you are disciplined and organised you can do the job.

"There are certain strengths and weaknesses in the squad but everyone has a clean slate. Certain standards in terms of mobility need to be addressed but if there is investment in the team we can succeed. There is ambition here.

"I prefer to look upwards and have no qualms about relegation. We have a massive game against Southampton tomorrow and we want a few results to build on. "We want players to sweat blood for the Sky Blue shirt but we will have nothing without togetherness.

"We place huge stall on developing the individual from the Academy upwards and the first team players have to have influence over the academy players and we have to get everything in the right direction.

"We will set the process, allow the players to play without shackles and hopefully have massive investment."

Paul Fletcher added: "This is the major day for Coventry City Football Club and we are going to give all the support we can to Iain Dowie.

"We said we would speak about the managers job on Sunday and I'm sorry Adrian Heath only had five games and was a victim of circumstance but we had to act quickly to get our man"
