Former Coventry City Chairman Bryan Richardson has denied that he played a big role in the decline of the club.

Richardson who was in charge of the Sky Blues who got themselves into £60m's worth of debt. something he denied by telling BBC Coventry & Warwickshire's Trish Adudu: “That was a number put out by people who maybe wanted to discredit me and the project itself.”

He was also responsible for the Arena 2000 project which turned into the Ricoh Arena which he claimed had full board backing by saying: “Everyone on that board was 100 per cent in support of building the new stadium. “There was not one doubter.”

Mr Richardson also admitted that the reason that the Ricoh Arena has not gone on to be a stadium which was for the sole benefit of Coventry City Football Club and said: “The fact of the matter is they did not stick to terms agreed with Tesco.

“It was never intended to be a 50/50 deal with the council.

“It was always intended it would be 100 per cent owned by Coventry City Football Club.

“Of course I take responsibility - I am the chairman of the company - but the problem with the whole process was it didn’t come to fruition because there were areas which were not handled properly.”
