Gary McSheffrey has announced that he would be prepared to play for the Republic Of Ireland if new boss Steve Staunton was to call him.

Speaking to the CET,City's leading scorer said: "If Stan got in touch with me I would be honoured to go and play for Ireland because that's where my dad's from and three of my grandparents as well.

"In fact I am as Irish as probably half of the current squad. When I was 17 or 18 I got called into the England under-21 squad so there was always that wishful thinking. But I am 23 years old now and there are so many good players in the England squad. People like Jermaine Defoe and Darius Vassell are not even getting a look in at the moment.
"Wayne Rooney is going to be around for the next 10 to 12 years and there is Michael Owen so I have got to be realistic and if an opportunity to play international football with another country comes up then these days you grab it with both hands because there can only be good things to come from it."
